Introduction to the OnePlus 12

After launching in China, OnePlus eventually made the OnePlus 12 and its companion devices, the OnePlus 12R and the OnePlus Buds 3, available worldwide. This updates the company’s portfolio in preparation for another competitive year for Android flagships.

The basic design of the OnePlus 12 is unchanged from that of the OnePlus 11. This entails a unique camera housing, a glass rear, and a three-step alert slider.

Regretfully, the phone’s highest IP65 rating falls short of those hoping for true water resistance. This indicates that it is not water-resistant, so you shouldn’t submerge it in the pool. It should be fine in the shower or during a heavy rain, though, as the rating indicates that it is better shielded against water jets.

Design and build

The build quality and design are excellent on the OnePlus 12. It weighs 220 grams and is 164.3 x 75.8 x 9.15 mm in size. Corning Gorilla Glass 5 is applied to its back. There are two colors available: silky black and flowy emerald.

If you’re familiar with the design of the OnePlus 11, the OnePlus 12 adopts a similar approach, citing luxury timepieces as inspiration for its “design philosophy.” The circular rear camera element, known as the “starry dial,” is intended to symbolize the “passage of time.”

Practically speaking, the OnePlus 12 has a distinctive enough design—especially with that rear camera module—that you should be able to distinguish it from a group of flagship phones with comparable specs.

This is made possible by the phone’s new “Flowy Emerald” signature coloring. It is also available in black and white, with the white one being exclusive to China at the moment.

Display

OnePlus has released the OnePlus 12, a 6.82-inch QHD+ OLED display with a resolution of 3168 x 1440 pixels. The 120Hz ProXDR Display with LTPO Panel offers a dynamic refresh rate of 1-120 Hz, complemented by a peak brightness of 4500 nits. The display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus and supports up to 1,600 nits of brightness in high brightness mode. OnePlus claims the display has “medical-grade” eye protection features, including melatonin protection, to prevent sleep loss.

The phone also features Rain Water Touch technology for improved touch input when the screen or hands are wet. The 2K ‘Super Fluid’ LTPO AMOLED panel with a dynamic 120Hz refresh rate and peak brightness of 4,500 nits makes it the brightest smartphone screen on the planet.

Processor and Performance:

OnePlus, a leading smartphone brand, has introduced the OnePlus 12, powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 CPU. The device offers impressive memory and storage options, including 256GB/512GB UFS 4.0 storage and 12GB/16GB LPDDR5X RAM. The worldwide version has 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, while China offers up to 24GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. The phone is IP65-rated, making it slightly more water-resistant than its predecessor but still falling short compared to major competitors like Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Ultra and the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

The OnePlus 12 is powered by the newest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, which offers 30% faster CPU speeds, 25% better graphics, and 10% more power efficiency. It also features LPDDR5X RAM, up to 16GB, which can be used with OnePlus’s RAM Vitalization technology integrated into Oxygen OS 14. A 24GB/1TB model is available in China. The OnePlus 12 also features a cryo-velocity cooling system for extended gaming performance.

Camera:

The OnePlus 12 is a Hasselblad-branded smartphone with impressive camera hardware, largely identical to the OnePlus Open. It features a 50MP main camera, a 48MP ultrawide camera, and a 64MP 3x periscope camera. This is the first time a periscope camera is on a conventional OnePlus smartphone, offering respectable low-light image quality. The phone also boasts portrait shots and 6x zoom snaps. It also has a multi-spectrum color sensor for accurate color capture.

The front camera is a 32MP camera with 4K/30fps video recording, which could compete well against the Galaxy S23 and the Pixel 8. The camera setup could compete well against the Pixel 8 and the OnePlus Open. OnePlus and Sony worked together to create the 50MP Sony LYT-T808 “Pixel Stacked” sensor, which is the focal point of the camera hardware. The 48MP Sony IMX581 ultra-wide has a 114º FoV, and the 64MP OV64B 3x telephoto sensor has a more diverse total focal range compared to the OnePlus 11’s rear cameras.

Battery and Charging:

With a 5,400mAh battery, the OnePlus 12 is the company’s new flagship phone and a major improvement over the OnePlus 11 and OnePlus Open. The battery has 80W cable charging and 50W wireless charging, and it is anticipated to retain 80% of its capacity after 1,600 charging cycles. With a 5400 mAh capacity, the OnePlus 12 boasts one of the biggest batteries found in a flagship phone to date. Fully charged in just 26 minutes, the rapid charging technology is supported by 50W ‘AirVOOC‘ wireless and 100W ‘SuperVOOC‘ wired charging. Like the OnePlus 11, the US version of the OnePlus 12 has somewhat slower 80W wired charging, though.

Storage Options and pricing :

OnePlus has launched the OnePlus 12 in India in two variants: the basic 12GB RAM and 256GB internal storage version, priced at Rs 64,999, and the premium 16GB RAM and 512GB internal storage version, priced at Rs 69,999. The smartphone is available in Flowy Emerald and Silky Black colors and will be available on Amazon.in and other partner stores in India.

Comparison with Previous Models:

With a circular rear camera element, a 48MP Sony IMX581 ultra-wide sensor with a 114º field of view, and a 64MP OV64B 3x telephoto sensor with OIS, the OnePlus 12 smartphone is designed with the same principles as the OnePlus 11. Along with a glass back and a three-stage alert slider, it has an unusual camera housing. Another notable improvement over the OnePlus 11 and OnePlus Open is the phone’s 5,400mAh battery. Both 80W cable and 50W wireless charging are compatible with the battery, which retains 80% of its capacity after 1,600 charging cycles.
